Capsules Part 1

10 May 2016

The environmental impacts of coffee capsules are well documented yet those concerns have had little impact upon their popularity with sales and sales projections growing exponentially.  Nevertheless, responding to an emerging green refrain, the city of Hamburg has recently published a 150 page “ Guide to Green Procurement “. Not surprisingly, coffee capsules are now banned from public institutions and government bodies. Jan Dube, spokesman for the Hamburg Department of Environment and Energy was quoted as saying “ The capsules can’t be recycled because they are often made of a mixture of plastic and aluminium.  It’s 6g of coffee in 3g of packaging. We in Hamburg thought that these shouldn’t be bought with taxpayers’ money.” Do not expect Nespresso Arpeggio to be served when the good burghers of Hamburg next convene at city council.
